Here it is. The space I never thought we would actually reveal, Our Home Office! This has been a work in progress over the past year and half at least. Which is a hard reality to swallow when we remodel for a living. Guess that’s what happens when we put client projects before our own. Needless to say I am very excited to FINALLY share with you our home office.
Before we go any further let’s take a walk down memory lane.
Here’s what our office looked like when we bought the house.
To now….
Talk about major improvements, in one little space. We’ve partnered with Sherwin Williams to bring you all the paint happiness here! We both like to look at this as two spaces: the mudroom and office! Both of which are functional spaces to keep our family organized while allowing Michael and myself to dive into work while in the comfort of our own home.
Our mudroom is completely custom. We worked together to make it as functional and purposeful for our family as possible. Starting with 4 large cubbies with soft close shaker style doors. I knew I no longer wanted to see my kids backpacks, coats and collection of things they manage to gather daily inside their cubbies. I also wanted to make sure that the doors were placed properly so we never needed to worry about them slamming into each other when opened, since we have two young boys in and out of the house often. We used these 12 inch Sommerville Drawer Pull in aged brass on each door. The bottom shaker style drawers are used for mittens, gloves, hats and snow pants in the winter and summer fun during the summer months. The upper cubbies feature additional storage for those things needed less often. And yes, they too are finished with shaker doors as well. We used the Sommerville Cabinet Knobs in aged brass here and the entire mudroom build was sprayed in Sherwin Williams’ Tricorn Black. To make this piece a little different and add some depth we finished the base with red oak finished in a satin polyurethane and mounted the uppers to the base and wall.
Hello custom walnut desk! We wanted our desk to center the room. The best way to do this was to build one custom for the space. Michael is keen on having minimal clutter in our office and the Gather Basic set from Ugmonk allows for just that with a modular system for organization. We fell in love with these modern tufted chairs with gunmetal arms which are comfortable, functional and sexy! We absolutely love the color, which shines brighter with our round Lambert light from Hudson Valley centered above the desk. Under the desk we added Loloi Silvia from the Justina Blanekey Collection complementing our LIFECORE Anew Genteling Oak floors perfectly.
Michael built and installed custom built-ins completely wrapping two perimeter walls and finished them in Sherwin Williams Rosemary Satin! We wanted to make sure we had storage for all of our growing book collection and everyday items we need while working. When it came to styling these shelves I went in a really simple direction. I removed all of the book covers and separated books based on color. I then layered in books across the shelving. It really makes sense too, as we’re always removing the covers when we read hardcover books…so this eliminates that and the look and feel of the bindings are perfect.
The back wall is an art gallery in progress as Michael and I love to collect art from travels and artists. We’re fortunate to have some extremely talented artists we get to call friends, including Adrian O. Walker who shot our favorite piece titled “Breathe”. To finish the walls we added a few wall sconces for additional ambiance.
We found our office doors on Facebook Marketplace from an old building in downtown Detroit. Our original hope was to refinish them by sanding them down and staining them. But through the process we quickly realized the stain was not going to provide us with the look and feel we wanted to achieve. For that reason we decided to paint them, choosing Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black to match the other doors in our home. We replaced the glass so we could actually see through it as the original glass had so many scratches. I think Michael might have gone crazy if we left it! We then added Emtek satin brass modern hardware to the french doors.
So there you have it. 3 iterations and a year and a half later, our Home Office is finally complete.
-Much love
